The Bible critic tempted<\/strong>
\n\tIt is not easy to always remain honest in life, isn’t it? This is also true for a Bible critic. Quite often there will pass a Bible passage which can be made a Bible Contradiction by simply not quoting all of what is given in the text. This is a real temptation for a Bible critic, which we may not overlook. For instance 2 Chronicles 17:6.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Canaanite high place furniture<\/strong>
\n\tThe SAB critic quotes: “…he took away the high places,” instead of “… he took away the high places and groves out of Judah<\/em>.” He omits the 'groves out of Judah' (KJV). What is so tricky about this? In the Hebrew text we read for groves ‘asjerim’. In former days one might suppose that ‘holy woods’ were meant, but for a long time already we know that wooden sculptures are what’s meant here; or simply a wooden pile or a living tree beside a Canaanite altar referring to a Canaanite goddess Asjerah. It was a necessary part of the furniture of a Canaanite high place.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Conclusion 1<\/strong>
\n\tWe may see quickly that according to 2 Chronicles 17:6 Jehoshaphat removed the Canaanite high places which was prescribed by the Lord: “…<\/em>on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.<\/em> 3 You shall tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and burn their Asherim with fire, …”<\/em> Deuteronomy 12:2-3<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
High places for Jahwè<\/strong>
\n\tOn the other hand there were also high places for the Lord, built in the period when the holy place along with the tabernacle at Shiloh had been destroyed. There was even the presupposition in the Law of Moses that this could happen: “You shall not plant for yourself an Asherah of any kind of tree beside the altar of the Lord your God, which you shall make for yourself.<\/strong> 22 You shall not set up for yourself a sacred pillar which the Lord your God hates.”<\/em> (Deuteronomy 16:21-22) The sacred pillar was a great stone sometimes with an image of the male god Baal.<\/p>\nAs long as there was not yet a central temple it was accepted practice that there were several high places for Jahwè to sacrifice: “<\/em>The people were still sacrificing on the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the <\/em>Lord<\/em> until those days.”<\/em> (1 Kings 3:2)
\n\tSamuel the seer invited Saul to come with him to the high place of the Lord and shortly after that he anointed Saul to the future king of Israel (1 Samuel 9:19 etc.).
\n\tIt remained common usage to bring sacrifices at the high places for Jahwè long after the building of the temple.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Conclusion 2<\/strong>
\n\tJehoshaphat did not remove the high places for Jahwè despite there was already a temple. So is this a contradiction with the removing of the Canaanite high places? Of course not.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
