The contradiction seems obvious enough. Abraham had many more children than Isaac, so how is it possible then to speak about Isaac as ‘his only begotten son’?”

Most people who read the SAB contradiction certainly don’t see that the central verse is quoted (KJV) entirely wrong by SAB: “And Hagar bare Abraham a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.” It is absolutely wrong to say that Hagar bare Abraham a son. At the time that Ishmael was born, Abram had not gotten his new name Abraham yet; he was still named Abram at the time of Ishmael’s birth. So the quote (KJV) must be: "And Hagar bare Abram a son …". (See: Genesis 16:15)

Son of the promises

And that is exactly the reason why the author of Hebrews could say that "Abraham offered Isaac, … his only begotten son …". Ishmael was not the son of Abraham but of the old Abram, while Isaac was the only son of Abraham at the time of the offering. Isaac was the son of the promises.

No Bible Contradiction at all

The new name Abraham caused the old name, Abram, to become "out of use", and because of that Ishmael could be called "son of Abraham" (Genesis 17:23-26, 25:12) as he was circumcised and all the male descendants of Abraham in later times could be called so. But strictly speaking, the author of Hebrews is perfectly right to speak about Isaac as "the only begotten son of Abraham" at the time of the offering.

God’s grace

The moment of the offering of Isaac was a critical one for Abraham and for Isaac. They both freely took part in the event. Fortunately, just before Abraham raised his hand (with the knife) to kill his son, the angel spoke and stopped him. And so Abraham was spared not only from killing his son, but also from suffering the cruel emotions of actually doing so.

No Bible Contradiction

The Skeptic Annotated Bible critic complains: “How many sons did Abraham have?
