The prophet Samuel had anointed him and before he came home he met a group of prophets in spiritual ecstasy. Saul joining them also came into ecstasy. From that time onwards the saying came around: “Is Saul among the prophets?” The saying probably expressed the fact that the Spirit of the Lord could touch someone who did not seem to be interested in spiritual matters. The additional meaning of the saying was here certainly positive: The Lord is able to touch someone we would not expect.

1 Samuel 19:24

Later in the Saul story we read that David fleeing from Saul arrived at the prophet Samuel. Saul persecuting David also came there and again came into spiritual ecstasy. By that it seems that David being on the run from Saul was able to escape from him. In this occasion again we read: “Therefore they say: Is Saul among the prophets?” The usual translation, however, is not correct. An imperfect is used in the Hebrew: “Therefore they said: Is Saul among the prophets?” The meaning is not that this saying started here as a common one. Again the people were surprised and repeated the already fixed expression.

Is it lasting?

It is possible that the initial positive connotation changed here into a negative, as the people knew Saul’s negative intensions that were only interrupted by a spiritual experience. As soon as it was over he continued to persecute David. In that case the meaning became: Be careful when someone behaves like a prophet, is it lasting?

Bible Contradiction?

A careful encounter with the texts allows the conclusion:

No Bible Contradiction

Proposed Bible Contradiction

There was in Old-Israel a saying: “Is Saul among the prophets?” There is confusion among the critics of the Bible as two different moments seem to be given for the origin of this saying.

[8

post-909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-1-samuel
["GET
https://www.contradictingbiblecontradictions.com/index.php?rest_route=/wp/v2/posts/909/revisions/3360
https://www.contradictingbiblecontradictions.com/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=909
